Baseball Downed by San Jose State, 8-3

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team allowed seven runs in the eighth inning to fall to the San Jose State Spartans, 8-3, on Tuesday, March 11. With the loss the Gaels fall to 8-11, while San Jose State improves to 10-8.

After starting pitcher Gabe Palma shutout the side in the first inning, Tim Spooner knocked in Gilbert Gil to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Gaels continued their dominance in the second inning as SMC loaded the bases with no outs. Mike Sansoe then earned the RBI on a bases-loaded walk. SJSU would then retire the next three batters to end the Gaels threat.

The Gaels added to their lead in the fifth inning when Bryan Byrne scored Gil on a base-hit up the middle, giving SMC a 3-0 lead.

The Spartans would cut the Gaels' lead to two runs after Markum King scored Kevin Frandsen on a ground out to first base. Frandsen got on base on an error.

In the eighth inning Frandsen knocked in a bases-loaded two-out double to tie the score at three runs. King would then give SJSU the lead with a single to center, scoring two runs. SJSU would extend their lead with three more runs.

Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Gil, Adam Bellows and Nick Conte, all finished with two hits. Palma was impressive in his second career start, going six full innings and holding the Spartans to no runs on three hits. Losing pitcher for the Gaels was Jeremy Gonzales, who went 1.2 innings, while giving up four earned runs on three hits.

The Gaels will begin West Coast Conference action on Friday, March 14, against the Santa Clara Broncos. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Louis Guisto Field.
