Baseball Earns 7-2 Victory Over Santa Clara

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team evened the three-game series against the Santa Clara Broncos with a 7-2 victory on Saturday, March 15. With the win the Gaels improve to 9-12 (1-1 WCC), while SCU drops to 9-16 (1-1 WCC).

Scott Dierks and the Broncos led off the first inning with a homerun, his fourth of the season. In the bottom half of the first inning, Tim Spooner retaliated with a towering shot to right field to give the Gaels a 2-1 advantage.

The Gaels strung together six straight base hits to earn four runs in the fifth inning, posting a 6-1 lead. Jeff Cunningham, Bryan Byrne and Delaney Gallagher earned the RBI's, while Gilbert Gil, Cunningham, Byrne and Spooner scored.

Saint Mary's added to their lead in the sixth inning when Gil scored Stephan Foushee on a sacrifice fly to right field, giving SMC a 7-1 lead.

The Broncos would add another run in the eighth inning to pull closer after a A.J. LaBarbera single.

Winning pitcher for the Gaels was Matt Yourkin, tallying his first victory of the season after going 7.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Santa Clara's Kellan McConnell earned the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year.

SMC's Adam Bellows, Gil, Spooner and Cunningham led the Gaels with two hits each, while Spooner and Gallagher tallied a game-high two RBI.

The Gaels will finish the three-game series on Sunday, March 16 against the Santa Clara Broncos. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
