Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team defeated the California Golden Bears for the sixth straight time at home, 6-2, on Tuesday, March 18, on Louis Guisto Field. With the win the Gaels improve to 10-12 on the season, while the Bears fall to 13-10.
The Gaels wasted no time getting on the board as Gilbert Gil led off with a single and was soon scored by Jeff Cunningham on a hit-and-run. Delaney Gallagher later hit a double to right center, scoring Bryan Byrne, who reached on a walk. After one inning of play the Gaels led 2-0.
The Bears would rally in the third inning with the bases loaded and one out. Conor Jackson would score Scott Cheo on a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Gaels extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth after a Mike Harris double to left field. Harris scored Tim Spooner, who reached on a leadoff double to left-center.
In the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out, Nick Conte connected on a sacrifice fly to right field to score Byrne. After five innings of play the Gaels held a 4-1 advantage.
Mike Harris led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. The next batter, Mike Sansoe, advanced Harris to third on a sacrifice bunt. Gilbert Gil earned his first RBI and second hit of the game when he singled home Harris to put the Gaels up 5-1.
The Gaels continued their offensive dominance in the eighth inning as Adam Bellows knocked in his third homerun of the season, giving SMC a 6-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Gabe Palma went 8.0 innings, while giving up one run on 10 hits en route to his first victory of the season. Cal's Joe Todoroff earned the loss, falling to 3-1 on the season. The Gaels finished with 13 hits as a team with Gil leading all batters with three hits.
The Gaels will return to West Coast Conference action on Friday, March 21 at the Pepperdine Waves. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Eddy Field Stadium.
