Baseball Wins 6-5 in Dramatic Fashion

Moraga, CA - Mike Sansoe led the Saint Mary's baseball team to a 6-5 thrilling victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, March 29. With the win the Gaels improve to 13-14 on the season/4-3 WCC, while the 'Zags drop to 11-13-1/2-6 WCC.

In the bottom of the third inning the Gaels ended a scoreless tie as Bryan Byrne scored Mike Sansoe on a slow roller to third. Sansoe reached on a single and was advanced on a Gilbert Gil single and Delaney Gallagher sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fifth inning, David Johnson and Gonzaga capitalized on a SMC error with a single to left field, scoring Brad Welker and tying the score at one each. Chris Sinner and Danny Evans later singled to give GU a 3-1 advantage.

The Gaels retaliated in the bottom of the inning on a Gallagher double, scoring Gil, who reached on an error. After five innings of play the score was GU 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning the Gaels retook the lead as Sansoe led off the inning with his first career homerun to tie the score. Later, Tim Spooner knocked in a run with a line drive past the second baseman to score Byrne and give SMC a one-run lead.

Brad Welker helped GU regain the lead after a two-run homerun to left field in the top of the eighth inning.

Saint Mary's tied the score in the bottom of the eighth inning as Sansoe connected on his third hit of the day, this one a double to left center. After advancing to third on an Eric Dworkis balk, Gil scored Sansoe on a double to left field. Byrne later gave the Gaels the lead they needed on a double to left-center, scoring Gil and giving SMC a 6-5 advantage into the ninth inning.

Winning pitcher for the Gaels was Dane Dobrinich, who improves his record to 4-2 on the season. Losing pitcher was Dworkis, who falls to 3-3. Gabe Palma came in relief to earn his second save of the series and season.

The two teams will meet again for the final game of the three-game series at Louis Guisto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
