Baseball Falls to Gonzaga, 13-6

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped their only game of the three-game series to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 13-6, on Sunday, March 30. With the win GU improves to 12-14-1/3-6 WCC, while SMC falls to 13-15/4-4 WCC.

Gonzaga took the games first lead with five runs in the fourth inning. The 'Zags began the rally with two hits followed by a three-run homerun by Danny Evans, his third of the season. GU scored two more runs, with two outs, all unearned, after a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Gaels would tie the score in the bottom half of the inning with timely hitting. Bryan Byrne led off with a single and was followed by a Tim Spooner double to right field. Nick Conte tallied an RBI with a single to left field, scoring Byrne. Spooner would also score on a ground out and with two outs the Gaels loaded the bases. Adam Thompson got into the mix with a double to left center, scoring two and tying the run total at 5-5.

The Bulldogs ended a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a single to left field by David Johnson bringing home Jeff Culpepper. With two on and Dane Dobrinich in relief, Sam Hess knocked in a run with a double to right-center field. Danny Evans would later hit a single to score two more runs and help the 'Zags take a 9-5 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Spooner hit his third homerun of the season, a solo shot, to cut GU's lead to three runs.

Gonzaga would add four insurance runs in the top of the eighth to capture their only win of the series.

Winning pitcher for GU was John Gonzalez, who improves to 1-2 on the season, while David Fox drops to 0-1 with the loss.

The Gaels will continue West Coast Conference action on Tuesday, April 1 when they host the Santa Clara Broncos. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
