Baseball Falls to Cal 13-2 on Tuesday

Moraga, CA - California used 18 hits en route to a 13-2 victory over the Saint Mary's baseball team on Tuesday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field in a non-conference game. Cal's Conor Jackson went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Golden Bears. With the win Cal improves to 21-18 overall while Saint Mary's falls to 15-20-1.

Cal got on the scoreboard early when the second batter of the game, David Weiner, hit his first homerun of the season over the right field fence. Cal forced Saint Mary's starting, and losing, pitcher Dane Dobrinich in the second inning when the Golden Bears batted around in the second inning. A two-run single off the bat of Chris Grossman highlighted a six-run second inning for Cal.

SMC got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Mike Harris. Harris plated Jeff Cunningham who singled off the leg of Cal's starting pitcher Adam Gold. Cunningham reached third on a throwing error by Chris Grossman.

In the fourth inning, Cal added to its lead by scoring three runs. The Bears used three straight singles and a sacrifice fly to open the inning for its first two runs. The third run crossed the plate on David Nicholson's double off the leftfield fence, making the score 10-1. Cal added to its lead in the sixth inning when Brian Horwitz scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Justin Nelson. Nelson added a two-run homerun in the eighth inning to extend the Bears' lead to 13-1.

The Gaels added one run in the bottom of the ninth when Preston Young led off the inning with his first homerun of the season.

For the Gaels Gilbert Gil finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, while second baseman Mike Harris posted a 2-for-4 game. Cal's second pitcher of the game, Joe Todoroff picked up the win as he threw 2.1 innings of relief for the injured Jeff Gold who earned the start.

The Golden Bears were led by Conor Jackson and Justin Nelson. Nelson finished with a 2-for-4 game that included four RBI and a homerun. Brian Horwitz was 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in three runs.

Saint Mary's will return to West Coast Conference action on Thursday, April 17 when it travels to San Diego for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch is schedule for 3:00 PM. The series will continue on Saturday with a double header beginning at 11:00 AM.
