Baseball Drops to San Francisco, 12-6

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team was defeated by the San Francisco Dons, 12-6, on Sunday, April 27 on Louis Guisto Field. With the loss the Gaels fall to 17-25-1/7-13-1 WCC, while the Dons improve to 19-26/12-12 WCC.

The Dons wasted no time getting on the board as Joe Jacobitz blasted his fourth homerun of the season, a three-run shot, giving USF a 3-0 lead. Jacobitz would later score after a Ryan Sittauer single as the Dons scored four runs in a two-out rally.

The Gaels would score one run in the bottom of the first to cut the Dons' lead to 4-1. After a Delaney Gallagher and Bryan Byrne single, Tim Spooner collected an RBI on a USF error.

The Dons extended their lead with two runs in the second inning but the Gaels would cut USF's lead to three after scoring two runs of their own. Mike Sansoe and Gilbert Gil both collected an RBI as Jeff Cunningham and Sam Battle scored after reaching on a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively.

San Francisco continued to score at ease tallying three more runs in the third inning highlighted by a two-run double by Armand Gaerlan. The Don then scored two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning to take a 12-3 advantage.

The Gaels added a run in the seventh inning and two runs in the ninth inning to close the gap to 12-6.

Losing pitcher for the Gaels was starting pitcher Kevin Trochez, who drops to 1-4 on the season. Kevin Rose (4-6) earned the win for the Dons after going six innings, while giving up two runs on five hits.

Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Byrne, who finished 3-for-5 including a triple, while Gil and Gallagher collected two hits on the day. USF's Gaerlan went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Jason Howard, Sittauer and Jacobitz finished the game with two hits each.

The Gaels will return to non-conference action on Wednesday, April 30 at San Jose State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
