Baseball Falls 8-2 to Pepperdine

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team was defeated by the Pepperdine Waves, 8-2, on Saturday, May 10 on Louis Guisto Field ensuring a PU series victory. With the win the Waves improve to 33-18 on the season and 21-5 in West Coast Conference action, while the Gaels fall to 18-31-1 overall and 8-17-1 in WCC play.

The Waves scored first with a run in the first inning on a Chris Kelly sacrifice fly, scoring David Uribes, who reached on a single.

Pepperdine would then score two runs on three hits in the third inning to take a 3-0 advantage. Uribes and Brandon Daguio tallied an RBI after scoring Brent Haapanen and Kevin Estrada, respectively.

Mike Harris would help the Gaels get on the board in the fourth inning with a single to score Tim Spooner, who led off the inning with a walk.

In the top of the fifth inning the Waves scored two runs on one hit to take a 5-1 lead. Daguio collected his second RBI of the day on a double to scored Uribes. Daguio later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ty Harper.

Pepperdine added a run in the top of the sixth inning when starter Kevin Trochez walked Daguio with the bases loaded.

After the Waves scored a run in the seventh and eighth inning the Gaels tallied their second run in the bottom of the ninth. Harris scored Eli Champion who reached on a double and advanced to third on a Preston Young double.

Jacob Barrack improved to 9-1 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in WCC action after allowing one run on six hits. He also tallied five strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Starter Kevin Trochez (1-6) earned the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits in six innings of action.

Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Harris, who finished 2-for-4 with a team-high two RBI. Young and Delaney Gallagher also recorded two hits for the Gaels. Pepperdine's Kevin Estrada and David Uribes collected three hits on the day, while Daguio was 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high four RBI.

These same two teams will meet again for the rubber match on Sunday, May 11 on Louis Guisto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. The Saint Mary's baseball team will also be honoring its six graduating seniors prior to the game.
