Final Stats
Moraga, CA - The Pepperdine Waves slugged past the Saint Mary's baseball team 15-4 on Sunday, May 11 to sweep the Gaels in a three-game West Coast Conference series. With the win the Waves improve to 34-18 on the season and 22-5 in WCC play, while SMC drops to 18-32-1 overall and 8-18-1 in conference action.
In the first inning the Waves scored two runs on two hits. Kevin Estrada and David Uribes scored, while Chris Kelly and Ty Harper earned the RBI, respectively. The Gaels retaliated in the bottom of the inning with a run scored to cut the Waves' lead to 2-1 after one. Tim Spooner collected an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Delaney Gallagher.
The Waves scored again in the third inning on a Kelly sacrifice fly, scoring Uribes. The Gaels also scored in the inning on a base hit by Bryan Byrne. Byrnes single scored Gilbert Gil who slid into home safely, making the score 3-1 after three innings in the book.
The Waves increased their lead in the fourth inning with three runs on one hit and two Saint Mary's errors. Uribes tallied the Waves only RBI hit in the inning.
In the fifth inning the Gaels added two runs to cut the score to 6-4. Stephan Foushee led of the inning with a single and was followed with a Gil double down the left field line. Gallagher and Byrne earned the Gaels' RBI, both on groundouts.
The Waves would put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with six runs on six hits. Pepperdine recorded five straight RBI singles during the inning.
Pepperdine added three insurance runs in the ninth inning to increase its lead to 15-4.
The Waves Brandon Boesch earned the victory after eight innings pitched. Boesch allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters. Saint Mary's Matt Yourkin (1-8) recorded the loss after giving up six runs on four hits.
Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Byrne, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with a team-high two RBI. SMC's Gil also recorded a multiple hit game with a 2-for-5 performance. Pepperdine's Uribes finished a perfect 4-for-4, while Harper recorded three hits. Kelly, Daguio and Estrada each collected two of the Waves 17 total team hits.
The Gaels will return to non-conference action when they travel to the #3-ranked Stanford Cardinal on Tuesday, May 13. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM on the Sunken Diamond.
