Final Stats
Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team fell short of a comeback in a 8-6 loss to the Pepperdine Waves on Friday, May 9 on Louis Guisto Field. With the loss the Gaels fall to 18-30-1 overall and 8-16-1 in the West Coast Conference, while the Waves improve to 32-18 overall and 20-5 in WCC action.
The Waves did all of their damage in the first two innings with seven runs on 10 hits. Brandon Daguio and David Uribes tallied two hits, while Ty Harper, Cory Brightwell and Chris Kelly all knocked in two runs to give Pepperdine an early lead.
Pepperdine's Greg Ramirez (8-2) went 7.1 innings while giving up five runs on 10 and recording nine strikeouts. Eric Bowden fell to 7-6 on the season after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in two innings of action. Steve Kleen earned his third save of the year in relief.
The Gaels earned their first run in the bottom of the second as Tim Spooner led off the inning with a double. Spooner's double made him the Saint Mary's career all-time leader with 47 doubles, surpassing Jason Waugh (1999-02).
Bryan Byrne connected on his fifth homerun of the season, a solo shot, in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the score to 7-2 after four innings of play.
Both teams tallied a run in the sixth inning to bring the score to 8-3. The Gaels' Jeff Cunningham scored Delaney Gallagher on a RBI single.
In the eighth the Gaels put a scare in the Waves with two runs on three hits. Cunningham recorded his second RBI of the game as Adam Thompson also got into the action with an RBI to cut Pepperdine's lead to 8-5.
The Gaels continued to battle in the bottom of the ninth inning as Preston Young smashed his third homerun of the season, another solo shot for the Gaels. After two more hits by the Gaels, Pepperdine ended an SMC rally.
Dane Dobrinich was incredible in his relief outing allowing no earned runs on four hits in seven innings pitched. Dobrinich's ERA dropped from 6.35 to 5.59.
Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Gilbert Gil. The freshman was 4-for-5 at the plate, while James Gaulke and Cunningham recorded two hits each. Cunningham finished with a team-high two RBI.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday, May 10, on Louis Guisto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
