Irvine, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team defeated host UC Irvine in its second match of the Sunset Classic by a final score of 3-2. For the second consecutive match, the Gaels needed all five games to claim victory. Game scores of Saint Mary's defeat of UC Irvine were 30-14, 27-30, 30-21, 35-37, and 21-19. With the victory the Gaels improve their overall record to 7-3 while the Anteaters fall to 8-3.
In an extremely close game, the Gaels were able to overpower the Anteaters. Saint Mary's stellar attacking percentage of .362 was enough to down UC Irvine, as the Anteaters only finished with a .168 attacking percentage. Also, the Gaels commitment to every play was evident with a total of five players finishing with double digits in digs. A balanced performance from almost all participants was also a factor in the Gaels victory as four players finished with a double-double.
Leading the way for the Gaels was Lindsey Bogason. The 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree recorded a career-high 32 kills against UC Irvine, while also contributing 11 digs, three block assists, and two serving aces. The junior also finished second on the team with five assists. Freshman Mandy Bible recorded her second straight double-double in assists and digs during the Sunset Classic by posting a match-high 73 assists and 10 digs. Bible also finished with six block assists and two serving aces.
Sophomore Kaui Salzman had another great performance by finishing with 11 kills and 15 digs against the Anteaters. Salzman also posted one serving ace and one block assists. Fellow sophomore Erin Gravert continued her solid play with 10 kills and seven block assists. Also providing help for the Gaels was junior Stacey O'Connor who led the team with a .615 attacking percentage against the Anteaters which was compounded with her 16 kills.
Wrapping up Saint Mary's top performers was Jill Parmele. The senior recorded another double-double for the Gaels in kills and digs. Parmele finished with 19 kills, a team-high 20 digs, and three block assists.
Saint Mary's will resume action tonight against Houston in the final match of the Sunset Classic at 5:00 PM.
