Moraga, CA - John Leykam, a longtime friend and supporter of Saint Mary's College athletic teams, has been appointed Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics, Carl R. Clapp, effective immediately. In his new position, Leykam will assist in the areas of the Athletics Hall of Fame; community projects; the Silver Gaels Club; relations with athletics alumni, parents, and other athletic constituencies including sports reporters; special events and other initiatives.
"We're happy to have John join us," said Clapp. "John has been at Saint Mary's for two decades and has lived in the area for nearly 35 years. He has developed relationships that are very important for this department."
"I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to helping Saint Mary's athletics in every way possible," said Leykam, a former daily newspaper sports editor, writer, and columnist. The New York native has a B.A. from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. and engaged in Graduate Business study at Saint Mary's.
A President's Club member, John is actively involved in the Moraga Valley Kiwanis which staffs concessions at Gael football and basketball games and provides annual funding for athletics grants-in-aid at the College.
John and his wife, Christine, live in Concord and have four children. A son, Scott, Class of '95, is Co-Athletics Media Relations Director at Stanford University.
