San Luis Obispo, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team regained their winning ways Friday night against Cal Poly by defeating the Mustangs by a final score of 3-0. Games scores for the Gaels opening match of the Cal Poly Tournament were 30-27, 30-20, and 30-14. With the win Saint Mary's improves to 4-1 on the season while Cal Poly fell to 3-2.
The Gaels definitely stepped up their play against the Mustangs as the team finished with a .321 attacking percentage for the match. The Gaels totals of 49 kills and 52 digs proved to be too much for Cal Poly. The Mustangs only totaled 35 kills and 41 digs for the match. Saint Mary's was also aided by Cal Poly's .116 attacking percentage.
Leading the way for the Gaels was senior Jill Parmele as she recorded her second double-double of the season in kills and digs. Parmele posted a match-high 13 kills and 11 digs against the Mustangs. Making another solid contribution for the Gaels was standout freshman Cassandra Kolkka. Kolkka totaled eight kills, 10 digs, and one ace for the match.
Sophomore Kaui Salzman had another productive game after finishing with two kills, a team-high 14 digs, and one block assist. Junior Stacey O'Connor was also a force after posting a team-high three block assists. O'Connor, a 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree, also recorded two aces and six kills against Cal Poly. Also contributing to the Gaels' success with her overall play was junior Lindsey Bogason. She finished with eight kills, two digs, and one block assist.
Up next for the Gaels will be two matches tomorrow, September 6, to finish off the Cal Poly Tournament. Saint Mary's first match will be against a very strong SMU team at 11:30 AM followed by their final match of the tournament against Texas-San Antonio at 4:30 PM.
