Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team lost their second consecutive game to open the season on Saturday, falling to Cal Poly 10-0 at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels allowed four home runs, which accounted for all 10 of the Mustangs' runs. With the loss the Gaels fall to 0-2, and remain winless in head coach Jedd Soto's first season. Cal Poly improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Gaels started freshman right hander Shane Day, who pitched solid, except for two pitches to Bret Berglund. Day gave up two home runs to Berglund, which gave Cal Poly a 5-0 lead after the first three innings.
Saint Mary's relief pitcher Justin Sloan replaced Day, and gave up a two-run home run to Billy Saul to give Cal Poly a 7-0 through the top half of the seventh. Day then gave up a three-run home run to Kyle Blumenthal in the top of the eighth inning for a 10-0 lead.
The Gaels first run scoring opportunity of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when the Gaels had runners on first and third with no outs, but failed to score.
Cal Poly' starting pitcher Jonathan Fleming had a perfect game until the fourth inning when Bryan Byrne broke up the perfect game with a single to center field. Fleming finished the game pitching seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out five batters.
In the game the Gaels were led offensively by Bryne, who went 2-for-3 and Sam Carter went 1-for-3.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Sunday, February 1, when it wraps up its three-game series against the Mustangs at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
