No. 14 Volleyball Sweeps Season Series Against Pepperdine

Malibu, CA - For the first time in school history, the No. 14-ranked Saint Mary's volleyball team swept the season series against the Pepperdine Waves, and won for the first time in 17 tries in Malibu, dating back to 1987. The Gaels swept the Waves 3-0 on Friday night, improving to 18-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.

Saint Mary's took three games, 31-29, 30-25, 30-23, which marked the second time this season it beat the Waves. The Gaels beat Pepperdine 3-1 on October 2 at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels were 0-17 against the Waves in Malibu, dating back to the 1987 season, when they turned Division I. With the loss the Waves dropped to 6-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

On Friday night, the Gaels were led by four players who had double-doubles. Lindsey Bogason led the way with 18 kills, with a .317 hitting percentage, 12 digs and four total blocks. Mandy Bible had 44 assists, 11 digs and two total blocks, Kaui Salzman had 10 kills and 17 digs, and Cassandra Kolkka had 12 kills and 18 digs.

Saint Mary's middle blocker Stacey O'Connor added eight kills, seven total blocks, and two aces and Mariko Coverdale had five kills and four total blocks.

The Gaels won the opening game 31-29, behind six kills by Bogason, four kills and five total blocks by O'Connor, 11 digs by Stidham and 15 assists by Bible. Saint Mary's had a .164 hitting percentage with 19 kills and Pepperdine had a .121 hitting percentage with 15 kills.

Saint Mary's took an early lead in Game 2 and went on to win 30-25 behind Bogason, who had eight kills in the game. Bible added 15 more assists in the game, Salzman had four kills, and Kolkka had three kills. The Gaels hit .217 in the game with 17 kills and Pepperdine hit .128 with 14 kills.

The Gaels continued their outstanding play in Game 3, taking a 24-14 lead, and going on to win 30-23. Bogason once again led the way with 10 kills in the game. Stidham had four digs, Bible had 14 assists, Salzman and O'Connor had four kills, and Kolkka added six kills. Saint Mary's hit .230 with 19 kills and Pepperdine hit .072 with 15 kills.

Saint Mary's returns to action on Friday, November 5, when they host their second to last home match of the season against Portland at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels host their final match of the season on Saturday, November 6 against Gonzaga at 7:05 p.m.
