Men's Basketball Rolls to 77-42 Win over NDNU

Dec. 5, 2004

Final Stats

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team used a career-high 12 points from sophomore center Blake Sholberg to post a 77-42 victory over the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts on Sunday evening from McKeon Pavilion. Sholberg scored the first eight points of the second half, helping the Gaels cruise to the 35-point win. The victory improves the Gaels record to 6-3 on the year, while the NAIA-Division Argonauts fall to 2-7.

Sholberg, who's 12 points were also a game-high, was the only player for the Gaels to reach double figures in scoring. The scoring for the Gaels was well balanced, as all 11 players that saw action put points in the box score. Also scoring career-highs were Daniel Waddy with eight points and Rafael DaSilva with seven points, both in a reserve role.

Frederic Adjiwanou had another solid night for the Gaels as he added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds in 17 minutes. Daniel Kickert contributed nine points, five boards and four assists and Jonathan Sanders chipped in with eight points, a game-high five assists, and four rebounds.

As a team, SMC shot 48.1 percent from the field, making 26-of-54 shots for the game, while hitting on 8-of-22 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Saint Mary's dominated the glass, as it out rebounded NDNU by a 45 to 19 mark.

After the Gaels jumped out to a 13-4 lead, NDNU rebounded with a 12-2 run to take a 16-15 lead seven minutes into the game. Following the only lead of the game for the Argonauts, Saint Mary's rallied for an 11-0 run over the next six minutes, to take a 26-16 lead, and the Gaels never looked back. The first half lead reached 20 points (40-20) when Waddy dropped in a lay up off an assist from Brett Collins with 43 seconds left in the half.

Sholberg scored the first eight points of the second half to extend SMC's lead to 48-23 at the 18:05 mark. NDNU, which was led by Chris Clock and Jason Billie's 11 points each, got as close at 48-28 following a Dan Maldonado basket with 15:50 remaining, but that would be as close as the Argonauts got the rest of the night. The Gaels outscored the Argonauts 18-4 over the final seven minutes of the game as they cruised to the 35-point win.

Saint Mary's will return to action on Saturday, December 11 when the Gaels travel to the University of Hawaii. The game against the Warriors will begin at 7:00 p.m. Hawaii time and can be heard on the radio on KDIA AM-1640 at 9:00 p.m. PST.
