Baseball Ends Tournament With Loss to Santa Clara

Sacramento, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team lost their final game of the River City Classic 5-3 to Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon at American River College in Sacramento, CA. With the loss the Gaels drop to 3-9 on the season and Santa Clara improved to 6-5.
The Gaels and Broncos each scored runs in the first two innings for a 2-2 score, but SMC added one run in the third inning for a 3-2 lead. Santa Clara came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning with one run to knot the score at three apiece.
Both squads remained tied at four until the bottom of the eighth inning when pinch-hitter Nathan Faulkner stepped to the plate with a runner on first and delivered a game-winning two-run homerun to left center field.
Jordan Simo went seven full innings for the Gaels, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three. Dane Dobrinich took the loss and fell to 0-1 on the year after allowing the two runs on two hits in his only inning of work.
Bryan Byrne and Mike Sansoe each added two hits for the Gaels and Sansoe added an RBI along with Delaney Gallagher, who had one hit and one RBI.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, February 24, when it hosts San Jose State at 2 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
