Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season when they blanked Sonoma State 7-0. The Gaels won every match of the day except the # 1 doubles, but won the other two doubles matches and all the singles matches to come away with the sweep.
In singles play at the # 1 spot, Saint Mary's senior Rafael Lopez recorded his first victory of the season. Dropping his first game to Patrick Nagle 4-6, Lopez was able to battle back winning the next two sets 6-3, 10-3. Saint Mary's sophomores Martin Marechal and Andre Sion recorded their second consecutive singles win by defeating Thomas Morton 6-3, 6-3, and Andrew Laing 6-4, 6-3 respectively.
Also recording singles wins for the Gaels was junior J.J. Whitlinger and freshman Adam Fauvre and Dino Paul Ferrari. At the #4 position Fauvre defeated Matt Parker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. At the #5 and #6 positions Whitlinger and Ferrari defeated Phil Taylor and Ronnie Tuttle both by the scores of 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action the Gaels were able to capture two out of the three matches to earn the point. Saint Mary's lone loss came at the #1 doubles where Fauvre and Whitlinger were defeated by Nagle and Laing 8-4. The Gaels had no problems in the #2 and #3 doubles matches when the duo of Marechal and Sion defeated Parker and Taylor 8-3. Lopez and Ferrari teamed up to beat Morton and Tuttle 8-1.
In non-scoring action the duo of Dan Anderson and Thomas Dawson Roberts came back from a 6-1 deficit at the #4 doubles to win 8-6. Also in non-scoring matches Tim Welty and Caleb Sandford recorded victories at the #7 and #8 positions.
Saint Mary's returns to action when they travel to Malibu, CA. to face West Coast Conference powerhouse Pepperdine Saturday, February 4 at 2:30 PM.
