Baseball Drops Two Against Gonzaga

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team suffered two losses on Saturday afternoon, as the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs swept the Gaels in a doubleheader to open West Coast Conference action at Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary's dropped the first game 6-4, and lost the second game 8-2. With the two losses, the Gaels fall to 5-17 overall and 0-2 in WCC action. The Bulldogs improved to 8-11 and 2-0.
In the second game, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, scoring four runs in the first inning off starting pitcher Allan Lobban. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth inning when Chris Sinner hit a two-run home run. Gonzaga added two more runs in the seventh inning for its 8-0 lead.
Gonzaga starting pitcher Ed Clelland pitched eight innings, allowing no runs and two hits, while striking out 12 batters.
Offensively, the Gaels added two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a RBI double by J.P. Musgrove.
In the first game, the Gaels battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game 3-3 after a Stefan Foushee two-run home run in the sixth inning. The Bulldogs broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run by Mike Rundle.
Saint Mary's Mike Harris went 3-for-5 with one RBI, Bryan Byrne was 2-for-4, Adam Bellows went 3-for-5, and Mike Sansoe was 2-for-5.
The Gaels' starting pitcher Byran Oland pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and striking out six batters, while picked up the no decision.
The Gaels return to action on Sunday, March 21, when they wrap up a three-game series against the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
