Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team showed it could play with the No. 1-ranked Stanford Cardinal, as it battled the Cardinal to a 2-2 tie until the seventh inning, when Stanford opened up the game and beat the Gaels 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. With the loss the Gaels drop to 6-18 overall while the Cardinal improved to 16-3.
Saint Mary's fell behind 2-0, but battled back to score runs in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game 2-2, before Stanford used the long ball to pull away.
In the fourth inning, the Gaels' Bryan Byrne doubled to left field and then scored on a Delaney Gallagher single off Stanford pitcher Greg Reynolds. In the fifth innings, Saint Mary's Mike Harris singled and advanced to third base on a fielding error by Stanford centerfielder Sam Fuld. Harris then scored on a Reynolds wild pitch.
Saint Mary's starting pitcher Dane Dobrinich held the Cardinal at bay for the first six innings, allowing two runs on five hits before allowing three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
The Gaels added their final run of the game in the eighth inning after Sam Carter singled, followed by a Preston Young single and then followed by a Gilbert Gil RBI single.
In the game, the Gaels were led offensively by Mike Harris, who went 4-for-5 with one run scored, Mike Sansoe was 2-for-4, Sam Carter went 2-for-4, Preston Young went 2-for-3 and Gilbert Gil was 2-for-4.
The Gaels pounded out 14 hits against the Cardinal, while Stanford managed 13 hits. Saint Mary's left 10 runners on base as well.
Dobrinich (0-3) picked up the loss for the Gaels, while Reynolds (1-0) picked up the win for Stanford.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Friday, March 26 when it faces San Diego at 2 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field in the first game of a three-game series.
