Baseball Suffers Road Loss at Nevada

Reno, NV - The Saint Mary's baseball team suffered an 8-3 road loss to non-conference opponent Nevada on Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno, NV. With the loss the Gaels drop to 8-23 on the season. Nevada improved to 15-17 on the season.
Nevada had its big inning of the game in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs on three hits. Joe Mercer tripled and scored on designated hitter Ben Mummy's first home run of the game. One batter later first baseman Erick Streelman homered and the Pack led 4-0. Right fielder Jacob Butler's solo home run in the fourth made the score 5-0.
SMC got on the board in the top of the fifth inning scoring a pair of runs with the aid of just one hit. Third baseman Bryan Byrne singled in one run and right fielder Adam Bellows' sacrifice fly plated the second run of the inning to close the Gaels with three at 5-2. Mummy got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth belting his second home run of the game and the Pack led 6-2.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning. SMC got a single from left fielder Sam Carter and the next batter designated hitter Preston Young followed with a triple to score the run. Carter was unable to score from third with no outs as the next three SMC hitters were retired in order. Marcial scored his second run of the game in the sixth after he ledoff the inning with a bunt single and later scored on Butler's sacrifice fly.
The final run of the game scored in the bottom of the seventh when Streelman singled and moved to second after left fielder Derek McNeil walked. Both runners advanced on second baseman Eric Newman's sacrifice bunt. Streelman scored on Marcial's ground ball to short to make the final score 8-3.
Byrne(3-for-4,RBI), and Carter(2-for-5,R) had three and two hits each respectively to lead the Gaels. Three different hitters had an RBI for SMC.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, April 8 when it hosts Pepperdine at 3 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
