
Baseball's Comeback Falls Short Against Pepperdine

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning and rallied to score one run, but Pepperdine centerfielder Cory Brightwell threw out pinch runner Adam Callan with one out in the ninth inning to end the rally giving the Waves a 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
The Gaels' Mike Sansoe singled with one out to start the rally followed by a Preston Young double to centerfield. The next batter Gilbert Gil singled to center, allowing Sansoe to score easily, but that's when Brightwell came up with a perfect throw to force Callan out at home.
With the loss the Gaels drop to 3-8 in West Coast Conference action and 8-25 on the season. Pepperdine improved to 10-1 in conference and 16-16 overall.
Both teams received excellent pitching performances as the game went into the eighth inning tied at 0-0. The Gaels' Allan Lobban ended up taking the loss after pitching 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out eight batters. The Waves' Kea Kometani picked up the victory, allowing one run on six hits and striking out six batters as he pitched 8 1/3 innings.
In the game, the Gaels were led offensively by Preston Young, who went 3-for-4, Gilbert Gil went 2-for-4 and Bryan Byrne was 1-for-2 with two walks.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, April 10 when they wrap up the series with Pepperdine at 1 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
