
Baseball's Rally Falls Short in Ninth

Spokane, WA - The Saint Mary's baseball team rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, but fell one run short in an 8-7 loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Friday at Avista Stadium. With the loss the Gaels fall to 14-36 overall and 7-18 in West Coast Conference play. Gonzaga improved to 22-25 overall and 14-11 conference mark.
Saint Mary's got on the board first in the top of the third inning after Adam Thompson led off with a single and then advanced to third after a Bryan Byrne single. Then with two outs in the inning, Delaney Gallagher singled to centerfield, scoring Thompson for the game's first run.
Gonzaga quickly answered with five runs in the bottom of the third inning off starting pitcher Allan Lobban, including a grand slam by Bobby Carlson.
The Gaels battled back and cut the lead to 6-5 after they scored four runs in the seventh inning. The rally started when Gallagher hit a two-run single to centerfield for his second and third RBI of the game. Following Gallagher, Adam Bellows hit a two-run home run down the left field line.
Gonzaga added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-5 after seven innings.
In the ninth inning, the Gaels added two runs to cut the lead to 8-7 when Preston Young hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, and Byrne scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Michael Harris.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, May 15, when they face Gonzaga in the second game of a three-game series at noon in Spokane, WA.
