San Diego, CA - San Diego out-slugged Saint Mary's to win Game 1 of a West Coast Conference series 16-10 Thursday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium. San Diego (33-21, 17-11) improve to 13-2 over its last fifteen games. Saint Mary's (14-39, 7-21) will try and rebound when the series concludes with a scheduled doubleheader Friday beginning at 11 a.m.
San Diego gave starting pitcher Kyle Collins an early advantage after USD scored five first inning runs. Collins (7-1) was knocked around for eight hits and five earned runs over five innings of work Thursday, but did manage to win his seventh consecutive decision.
Trailing 5-0, Saint Mary's rallied to take a 6-5 lead with a six-run third inning. Stefan Foushee led the Gaels' offensive efforts by hitting for the cycle. Foushee hit a two-run homerun in the third and added a two-RBI double in the sixth. Despite Foushee's offensive outburst the Gaels were unable to contain the San Diego bats, surrendering its 6-5 lead by allowing three USD runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Torero senior Joey Prast hit his eighth homerun of the season, belting a three- run shot over the leftfield wall in the San Diego fifth. Abruzzo's three-run homer in the seventh was his eighth of the season. Seven Toreros enjoyed a multi-hit game as Tom Caple went 3-for-4, Josh Hansen 2-for-4 and Jose Ortega 2-for-3.
Allan Lobban (2-8) started for Saint Mary's and was the pitcher of record for the Gaels.
