Volleyball Knocks Off No. 18 San Diego

Moraga, CA - After playing four tough matches against No. 18 San Diego, the Saint Mary's volleyball team closed out the Toreros in convincing fashion in the fifth game, beating San Diego 15-6 and winning the match 3-2 on Friday night at McKeon Pavilion.

The Gaels jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but after losing two close games, the Gaels put the Toreros away. Saint Mary's 30-22, 30-25, 27-30, 29-31, 15-6 win improves its record to 14-4 overall and 5-1 during West Coast Conference play. The loss drops San Diego's record to 14-4 overall and 3-3 during WCC play.

Saint Mary's had five players record double-doubles, including Mandy Bible, Christina Kirk, Cassandra Kolkka, Kaui Salzman and Missie Stidham.

Kolkka had 13 kills with a .281 hitting percentage and 19 digs, Salzman had 13 kills and 12 digs and Stidham had 14 kills and 16 digs. Kolkka also added five aces and Stidham had four aces.

Bible recorded 46 assists and 11 digs for her double-double and also added eight blocks. Kirk recorded 12 kills and added 10 blocks. Kirk also had a match-high six aces.

Overall both team played excellent defense. The Gaels held San Diego to a .094 hitting percentage and Saint Mary's recorded 17.5 blocks. Saint Mary's hit .148 as a team, but hit .300 in the fifth and deciding game.

Freshman Brittany Barker recorded eight kills with a .353 hitting percentage, Lyndsey Parker recorded 13 digs and Taylor Groess had two aces and three digs.

San Diego was led by Christie Dawson, who recorded a match-high 16 kills. Moira McCarthy had 11 kills and Jackie Bernardin had 38 digs.

The Gaels return to action on Saturday, October 22 when they host Santa Clara at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
