Volleyball Drops Home Match to No. 13 Santa Clara

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's volleyball team dropped their second West Coast Conference match of the season on Saturday night, falling to No. 13 Santa Clara 3-0 at McKeon Pavilion. With the loss the Gaels fall to 5-2 during conference play, but remain in second place, and 14-5 overall. Santa Clara improves to 7-0 in conference and 18-1 overall.

Saint Mary's came out slow against the Broncos and Santa Clara took a 30-23 victory in the first game. Santa Clara won a close second game 30-27 and went on to win the final game 30-24.

Overall the Gaels were led by Christina Kirk, who had 10 kills with a .309 hitting percentage and added five blocks. Missie Stidham had 13 kills, Kaui Salzman had seven kills, Cassandra Kolkka had six kills and Brittany Barker had five kills. Mandy Bible added 34 assists, seven digs, two aces and four blocks and Salzman had a team-high nine digs.

Saint Mary's hit .209 as a team, but the Broncos hit .306. The Gaels recorded 11.5 blocks compared to the Broncos 10.5.

The match between the two schools also set a new volleyball attendance record with 652 fans, breaking the previous record which was set against Stanford last season.

The Gaels return to action on Saturday, October 29 when they host San Francisco for their lone match of the week at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
