San Bruno, CA- The West Coast Conference announced its 2005 Fall All-Academic teams which included four Saint Mary's student-athletes. At the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports. To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his or her team.
Saint Mary's senior Kaui Salzman and junior Christina Kirk earned All-Academic honors for the women's volleyball team, Katie Frattone was tabbed All-Academic for the women's soccer team and Alex Christlieb earned the honor for men's soccer.
Salzman, a communications major, had a 3.32 grade point average, while guiding the SMC women's volleyball team to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Salzman was named All-WCC honorable mention after posting 3.52 kills and 4.21 points per game.
Kirk adds on to her All-WCC First Team selection, accumulating a 3.40 grade point average in psychology. Kirk had a breakout season for the Gaels, leading the conference in blocks and aces. Her 2.00 blocks per game ranked her second in the nation.
Frattone earned all-academic honors after graduating with a 3.56 grade point average in kinesiology. Frattone garnered All-WCC Second Team status after leading the team with six goals, including two game-winners. Frattone finished the season with 13 points, adding one assist and a hat-trick in conference action.
Christlieb, a business major, earned a 3.47 grade point average, while leading the Gaels to one of their best seasons in school history. For the first time in his career, the junior nabbed All-WCC honorable mention accolades after recording 12 points on five goals and two assists from the backfield.
"These honorees represent the commitment of WCC student-athletes to both academic and athletic excellence," said WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran. "Every year, it's a difficult process to narrow the long list of qualified nominees from each institution. All of those nominated should be proud of their achievements."
