Box Score

Moraga, CA - In the Saint Mary's baseball team's home opener at Louis Guisto Field, the visiting California Golden Bears spoiled the day with a 5-1 victory on Saturday in Moraga. The Bears scored the game's first run and was led by a solid pitching performance the rest of the way. With the loss the Gaels fall to 2-7 overall, while Cal improved to 8-4.

The Gaels also received excellent pitching from starting pitcher Joel Fountain, who gave up two earned runs in seven innings of work. But it was Cal's Eric Dworkis, a Gonzaga transfer that pitched a complete game, only allowing one earned run, while striking out 10 batters.

After a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give Cal a 1-0 lead, the Gaels answered with their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Mike Sansoe led off the two-out rally with a single, followed by an Adam Thompson single. With runners on first and second Cody Nelson hit a line drive to left field to score Sansoe and tie the game 1-1.

Cal answered with a solo home run in the fourth inning and tacked on one run in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings.

Offensively the Gaels were led by Mike Sansoe, who went 2-for-3, and Preston Young, Bryan Byrne, Cody Nelson and Adam Thompson each recorded a hit.

Saint Mary's wraps up its three-game series with Cal on Sunday when it travels to Berkeley to face the Bears at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
