Patrick Mills Named WCC Player of the Week

San Bruno, CA - Saint Mary's freshman guard Patrick Mills led the Gaels to the tournament title of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic and was then named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday, December 26. The weekly honor was the second of the season for Mills and the third selection for Saint Mary's in seven weeks of the seasonal award.
The Gaels opened the tournament by defeating Tulane, 64-57, the East Tennessee State, 89-65, and finally Ohio in the championship game, 70-63. Mills started the tournament by tossing in a game-high 23 points against Tulane. He followed that up with 11 points and a game and career-high eight assists against East Tennessee State. In the final game of the tournament, The Canberra, Australia native tossed in a team-high 23 points against the Bobcats. For the week, Mills averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 assists to help the Gaels improve to 10-1 on the season.
Through 11 games, Mills is averaging a team-best 16.5 points per game and ranks 138th in the country in scoring. The freshman has scored in double figures in 10-of-11 games while leading the team in scoring six times. He also leads the team with 47 assists (4.2 apg) and 17 steals (1.5 spg). Additionally, he is shooting 43.0 percent from the floor and 84.7 percent from the free throw line.
Mills and the Gaels will return to action on Friday night in the Fifth Annual Shamrock Office Solutions Classic. The Gaels will look to defend their 2006 title when they open the tournament against Howard University. The game between SMC and the Bison will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. and will follow the opening game of the event between Furman and Cal State Fullerton, which begins at 5 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion.
