San Bruno, CA - Saint Mary's forward Brett Collins was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week after posting a 26-point performance in SMC's 92-83 win over San Francisco on Monday night. Collins shared the weekly conference honor with Pepperdine's Chase Griffin who scored a career-high 32 points against Loyola Marymount.
Collins was impressive on Monday night, tossing in a team-high 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor in the Gaels' win over the Dons. The 6-5 senior did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 22 of his 26 points after intermission on 8-of-9 shooting. In his final home game, the Phoenix, AZ native also grabbed four rebounds, dished three assists, and tallied one steal. The win solidified the Gaels' hold on fourth place in the conference standings.
For the season, Collins is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game. Collins is shooting 41.0 percent from the floor and a team high 41.4 percent from 3-point land this season. In the last six conference games, Collins is averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game, while shooting 58.2 percent (32-55) from the floor, 54.8 percent (17-31) from 3-point land and 73.9 percent (17-23) from the free throw line.
Griffin tossed in a career-high 32 points on 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) shooting from the field in a 93-88 win over LMU on Saturday. He also connected on 12-of-13 attempts from the free throw line, and knocked down 2-of-3 shots from beyond the arc.
The weekly honor marks the first career WCC Player of the Week award for both Collins and Griffin. Collins' weekly award marks the fourth of the season for Saint Mary's, as Diamon Simpson has garnered the award three times this season.
Collins and the Gaels will conclude their regular season this weekend with two games in Southern California. Saint Mary's will play at Pepperdine on Saturday, Feb. 24 with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. and then close the regular season schedule at Loyola Marymount on Monday night with tip-off slated for 8 p.m. The game against the Lions will be televised on ESPNU.
