Women's Basketball Falls In West Coast Conference Tournament

Portland, OR- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team saw its season come to an abrupt end Thursday night. The Gaels fell to the Pepperdine Waves 71-67 in overtime from the Chiles Center. Saint Mary's finishes the season 14-14 overall and 8-6 in West Coast Conference play.
The Gaels took a 30-25 lead into the locker room at half and then increased it even more with a 38-29 lead with 15 minutes left.
But the Waves rallied back and took the lead with six minutes left in the half. The two teams went back and forth until junior guard Serena Benavente sank a three with two minutes left to even the score at 57.
Benavente again came up big for the Gaels with two key free throws with 35 seconds left to even the score at 59 and send it to overtime.
In the overtime, the Waves out-scored the Gaels 12-8 with Teiosha George and Teena Wickett pacing the Waves with two buckets a piece.
Wickett led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting. George followed with 18 points and 12 rebounds on 8-of-19 shooting.
Maija Lahde paced the Gaels with another double-double. The Finland native tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds. Sheridan Arredondo and Benavente each followed with 14 points.
Lauren Shaughnessy tallied eight points, six rebounds and eight assists. Eghosa Obaiza recorded six points and 10 rebounds.
Saint Mary's shot 37 percent (23-of-62) from the floor, 38 percent (3-of-8) from three and 72 percent (18-of-25) from the charity stripe.
Pepperdine shot 34 percent (26-of-76) from the floor, eight percent (1-for-12) from three and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the free throw line.
In head coach Paul Thomas' first season he leads the Gaels to 14-14 overall record and a 8-6 conference mark which is the best record by SMC in WCC play since the 2001 season.
