Saint Mary's Athletics Restructures Academic Services

Aug. 24, 2007

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's Director of Athletics and Recreation Sports Mark Orr announced the restructuring of the Student Support Services. A team of four will now serve the student-athletes in the area of compliance, eligibility and academic services.

"With the amount of emphasis the NCAA has placed on academic performance along with maintaining the high standard of academics at Saint Mary's, I felt it was imperative to place more resources in student support," Orr said. "Eligibility standards are changing and with APR in the fold, this move will better suit our student-athletes."

The team is comprised of Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services/SWA Katie Davis, Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services Kari Montero, Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance Stephanie Shrieve, and Coordinator of Compliance and Eligibility Chris Harrell. On top of the restructure, a Student-Athlete Academic Center will be available to the athletes in the fall semester.

Davis has been promoted from her position as Director of External Relations to her current position of Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services and she will serve as the department's Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). A former women's basketball standout at SMC, Davis has worked in the athletic department since 2004, when she was hired as the Director of Marketing and Promotions.

"By adding an additional position to the team, we will be able to put together a more organized system to better serve our student-athletes and coaches," Davis said.

Shrieve returned to SMC in 2006 after spending two years as the Associate A.D./SWA at UC Irvine. Prior to going to Irvine, Shrieve served as the Associate A.D. for Compliance/SWA at Saint Mary's from 2000-04. Montero has been at Saint Mary's for four years, the last two as the Associate A.D. for Student Support Services and SWA.

Harrell, a former SMC running back, has been a graduate assistant for the past three years working in Student Support Services. Harrell will receive a master's degree from SMC in Counseling and his credential in Pupil Personal Services.
