Menzhuber Hands Women's Soccer 2-1 Overtime Victory

Berkeley, CA - For the second consecutive game, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team went into overtime. Sunday's contest would not get as far as a tie, as sophomore Jessica Menzhuber netted the game-winner a minute into overtime to defeat Columbia 2-1 from Edwards Field. With the win, SMC improves to 1-0-1 on the season.
One minute into the overtime period, sophomore forward Allie Weiner found Menzhuber on a corner kick that she was able to net to finish off the Lions and Saint Mary's stay at the California Tournament.
Columbia scored first when Allison Leonard took a Sophie Reiser pass and chipped SMC goalkeeper Cari Makino in the 11th minute.
The score would remain the same until the Gaels answered in the 74th minute. True freshman Alex Ciliento tallied her second goal in as many games when Weiner found the forward, who buried the shot from 12 yards out.
Saint Mary's out-shot Columbia 15-14 and 8-6 in the second half. Weiner led the Gaels with four shots and put two on goal. Junior Stefani Rocco and Ciliento rallied of three shots a piece. Weiner finished the tournament with a goal and three assists. Ciliento tallied two goals on the weekend.
Reiser led the Lions and all players with five shots. Three different Columbia players recorded two shots a piece.
Makino allowed one goal and recorded a career-high seven saves en route to her first collegiate victory. Allison Vespa made five saves and allowed two goals for Columbia.
The Gaels will continue in tournament mode as they host the Saint Mary's Tournament. The Gaels will open up against Vermont on Friday, September 7 at 4:30 PM. The early game will feature Cal against Bakersfield at 2 PM. All games will be played at Saint Mary's Stadium.
