Baseball Wins a Thriller Down at The Farm

Feb. 25, 2008

Final Stats

Palo Alto, CA - In a game featuring strong pitching it was, sophomore second baseman Randy Wells two run double in the sixth that makes the difference, as Saint Mary's(2-1) wins 4-2 over host Stanford (2-2) at the Sunken Diamond.

The Gaels saw yet another solid outing from its starting pitching as sophomore Scott Schneider (1-0) goes six strong, scattering five hits, surrendering one run, a walk, while striking out four. The lone blemish on the day was a homerun given up to junior catcher Jason Castro in the bottom of the second.

The story early in the game was the Gaels inability to get that clutch two out hit, as Saint Mary's twice left the bases loaded unable to bring a run in. That all changed in the top of the sixth inning when Wells hit a clutch two out double down the right field line scoring senior right fielder Kenny Fuglerud and sophomore catcher Ryan Mulligan.

The Cardinal made it interesting in the later innings however, repeatedly putting men in scoring position, the biggest threat coming in the bottom of the eighth inning when Stanford had runners on second and third with only one out. Back to back highlight reel catches by Mulligan and junior center fielder Cory Miller ended the Cardinal threat.

The ninth inning was shut down by junior Anthony Selden who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth striking out one recording his first save of the season. Also putting in a strong relief effort was senior Alex Jensen who threw two scoreless innings.

The Gaels go back on the road tomorrow playing at UC Davis at 2 PM at Bobbins Stadium.
