Davis, CA. - Anthony Aliotti (1-0) allowed only two hits in seven innings of work, and Geoff Byrns went 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and two RBI's to lead Saint Mary's (3-1) to a 4-1 victory over UC Davis (2-3) in the Aggies' home opener at Dobbins Stadium Tuesday.
Aliotti makes the fourth Gael starter in a row this year to go at least six innings today, as he pitched seven, while giving up two hits four walks, and four strike outs in the win. The Saint Mary's bullpen had another strong outing from senior Alex Jensen and junior Anthony Selden who earned his second save of the season.
UC Davis junior Bryan Evans pitched six complete innings giving up six hits three runs while striking out nine Gaels. Two of the three runs he allowed came in the first inning. After retiring the first two batters and narrowly missing a strikeout on the third, the Gaels got a double from Kyle Jensen to score the first run and a triple from Byrns in the next at bat to jump ahead 2-0.
Saint Mary's saw some big hits tonight as senior Geoff Byrns hit his third and fourth extra base hits of the season hitting a triple in the first and the Gaels first homerun of the season in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Kyle Jensen continued his hot streak hitting his fifth double of the season.
Aggies senior infielder Evan Hudson drove in the Aggies' only run in the bottom half of the eighth inning off a deep single to right field that scored senior Matt Dempsey from second base. UC Davis managed to get the tying run up to bat in the eighth and ninth innings, but failed to score.
Along with Byrns, sophomore infielder Michael Cipolla and senior right fielder Kenny Fuglerud each had two hits for the Gaels. Fuglerud added the second Gaels homerun of the season in the top of the seventh.
The Gaels will end their short away trip this weekend when they host UW Milwaukee in a four game series starting Friday February 29 with the first pitch slated for 2 PM.
