Moraga, CA - Whitney Richards scored five goals to lead the Temple Owls to a 17-4 non-conference win over the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Berkley Summerlin had six points on three goals and three assists for the Owls, who improved to 2-2 overall, while the Gaels dropped to 0-6 on the year.
Richards and Summerlin were the only two Owl players to record a hat trick, but Temple had eight different players score goals in the game. Chelsea Rosiek, Nicole Caniglia and Hillary Richards had two goals each.
For the Gaels, P.J. Hainley led the way with two assists and Abbie Coleman and Lauren Frei added one goal each. Dana Elfvin and Claire Purcell had one assist each.
Temple opened the game with the first three goals off the sticks of Rosiek, Caniglia and Whitney Richards. Saint Mary's answered with two goals by Hainley, to get within one goal with 21:39 left in the half. Temple ended the first half by scoring nine straight goals, the last coming with three seconds on the clock by Summerlin, her third during the nine-goal streak.
Janell Myers scored the first goal of the second half at the 26:45 mark to five the Owls a 13-2 lead. Frei and Coleman scored their goals at the 24:31 and 14:57 marks respectively, cutting the Temple lead to 13-4. After Coleman's goal, the Owls ended the game by scoring the final four goals, as the last tally came off the stick of Lindsay Colferai with 6:27 left on the clock.
Bridget McMullan started in goal for Temple and recorded the win, improving to 2-2 on the year. McMullan collected two saves in the first half, before giving way to Jessica Colucci at the intermission. Colucci played 21 minutes before Katie Phillips took over for the final 8:57 of the game. Colucci allowed two goals while making five second-half saves.
Saint Mary's starting goalkeeper Hilary Gardner took the loss, as her record dropped to 0-6 this season. Gardner recorded six saves in the first half, but allowed 12 goals against 23 shots by the Owls. Whitney Campitiello made her first appearance of the season, and played the entire second half for SMC. Campitiello allowed five goals and made one save against eight shots by the Owls.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Thursday, March 13 against the Monmouth Hawks. The game between the Gaels and Hawks will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Saint Mary's Stadium.
