Baseball Shows Signs of Fatigue in One-Sided Loss

March 18, 2008

Box Score

San Jose, CA - Playing their fifth game in three days surely took its toll as Saint Mary's (12-5-1) fell to the Spartans of San Jose State (12-5) 10-4, in a lackluster performance. The Spartans scored three in the bottom of the first, but put the game away scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Sophomore starter Anthony Aliotti (1-1) appeared to struggle with his command in the bottom of the first surrendering three runs. The Gaels were able to get out of the inning without further damage, and Aliotti kept the Spartans in check the next three innings.

Aliotti didn't have an answer for the Spartans in the bottom of the fifth however as the home team put up six runs to end his day. On the evening, Aliotti went 4.1 innings pitched, 10 hits, nine earned runs, one walk, and one strike out.

The Spartans used nine pitchers on the day, with freshman pitcher Luke Mazzanti (2-1) getting the win in his one inning of work, surrendering one hit, one walk and two strike outs.

The Gaels managed to get 12 hits on the day, but were never able to string the hits together and make a big inning. The Gaels made it interesting in the top of the ninth scoring two runs, but the game ended on a 6-4-3 ground ball double play off the bat of sophomore Connor Larkin.

The lone bright spot of the game would be the relief pitching performance of freshman Alex Schmarzo, who went 3.2 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, one walk and three strike outs.

The Gaels will continue their four game road trip as they head down to Santa Barbara, to play the Gauchos of UCSB in a three game series at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, with the first game Friday March 21, with the first pitch slated for 2:00 PM.
