Baseball's Game vs. Stanford Halted Due to Darkness

March 5, 2008

Box Score

Moraga, CA - In a game that featured several late inning rally's from both teams, Saint Mary's (7-1) and Stanford (6-3) were forced to halt the game with the score tied 7-7, due to darkness. The game will resume on April 23 when the Gaels travel back to the Sunken Diamond to finish their three game series.

The Gaels took the lead 6-4 going into the top of the ninth following six unanswered runs from the bottom of the fifth to the eighth. The Gaels were unable to hold the lead however as the Cardinal scored three runs to retake the lead 7-6. Another late inning rally saw the Gaels tie the game up 7-7.

At the end of the 9th inning, the umpires deemed it too dark to get another inning in, and after a meeting at home plate with both coaches it was decided the game would be finished in April.

The game started out a pitchers duel as Anthony Aliotti (1-0) made it through three innings without surrendering a run. Cardinal catcher Jason Castro broke the tie with a solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning.

The Gaels didn't get their first run until the bottom of the fifth inning when junior centerfielder Cory Miller scored on senior first baseman Geoff Byrns sac fly. The Gaels scored at least one run in every inning after the fifth.

The Gaels head down south this weekend taking on UCLA in a three game series at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The first game is Friday with the first pitch slated for 6 PM.
