Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's (9-3) dominated Sonoma State on Wednesday afternoon, posting a 7-0 sweep over the Seawolves. The win marks the Gaels' fifth straight win, and the first time that they have blanked an opponent this year. Strong singles play anchored Saint Mary's, as no Gael played more than two sets in their respective matches.
Freshman Matt Welty played a solid match at the No. 6 position for Saint Mary's, defeating Sonoma State's Logan Bailey, 6-2, 6-2. The closest competition of the day took place between Marek Dvorak and Connor Olson, as Dvorak won the first set 6-4, with the second coming down to a tiebreak. Dvorak came out on top in the second, edging Olson, 7-6 (7-3). Joel Kusnierz returned at the No. 1 position for the Gaels, picking up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andy Musse. Rounding out the Gaels' singles wins were Lucas Tirelli, Andrea Zannoni, and Youssef El Bouzkouri.
In doubles play the Gaels won two out of three matches, as their only loss of the day came at the No. 3 position. Kusnierz and Zannoni paired up for a win at the No. 1 position, defeating Musse and McNulty, 8-5. Dvorak and Christner dominated the Seawolves' Bailey and Vaun at the No. 2 spot, posting an 8-1 win.
The Gaels return to action on March 8 at 12:00 pm, when they face Sacramento State at the Korth Tennis Complex.
