March 7, 2008

Box Score

Los Angeles, CA - The win streak for Saint Mary's (7-2) ended officially Saturday, the Gaels were off to their second best start since 1977 when they ran into No. 3 ranked UCLA (6-3) and Bruin starter Tim Murphy (2-0), loosing by a score of 14-0.

Murphy threw seven complete innings for the Bruins, giving up just one hit, a double, to sophomore first baseman Anthony Aliotti. The left handed Murphy also set a season high with 11 strike outs, and has gone 19.1 innings without surrendering a run.

Sophomore starting Pitcher Brandon Berl (2-1) went five complete innings, surrendering seven hits, seven runs, six earned, four walks, while striking out five. Berl struggled a little in the first giving up three runs in the inning. The first two came off a single from sophomore designated hitter Casey Haerther.

Freshman Taylor Reid came on for the Gaels in the sixth inning going a full three innings, surrendering seven hits, seven earned runs, walking two and striking out two.

The Gaels had their chances to pick up a few runs here and there. In the fifth Aliotti's double was followed by sophomore Scott Schneider's walk, however the Gaels were unable to advance the men on base. The same thing happened in the eighth after sophomore Ryan Mulligan and senior Kenny Fuglerud drew lead off walks.

The Gaels and Bruins pick up again tomorrow at Jackie Robinson Stadium, with the first pitch at 2 PM. Starting for the Gaels will be junior Brian Justice (2-0) vs. sophomore Gavin Brooks (0-0).
