Box Score
San Diego, CA - Offensively Saint Mary's (20-15-1/4-7 WCC) was red hot coming into the series against San Diego (30-11/9-2 WCC) but that has changed as the Gaels could manage only six hits on the day, ultimately falling to the Toreros by a score of 6-0, Saturday afternoon.
San Diego's second All-American pitcher Josh Romanski (7-0) remained perfect on the season, after throwing seven complete innings, scattering five hits, giving up no runs, walking two, and striking out five.
The Gaels just couldn't get anything going against the left-handed pitcher, sophomore Kyle Jensen saw his season high, 10 game hit streak end today after going 0-for-4.
Saint Mary's had a serious threat going in the top of the third when the bases were loaded for Jensen following back to back singles from junior Cory Miller and senior Kenny Fuglerud. A walk to junior Joel Staples loaded the bases, and with two outs Jensen had a chance to bring the Gaels back in it, but flied out to center to end the threat.
On the mound for the Gaels to start the game was sophomore Brandon Berl (3-4) who managed just 3.1 innings pitched, after giving up seven hits, four runs, three earned, while walking three and striking out three.
The Toreros took control of the game in the bottom of the third after scoring three runs. The inning was highlighted by James Meador two run homerun. Meador on the afternoon went 2-for-4 with the homerun and a triple, scoring two runs and knocking in three.
Of the six hits the Gaels had on the day, four came from Fuglerud and Staples. Fuglerud extended his season high hitting streak to 10 games after going 2-for-4 out of the lead-off position. Staples, continues his strong month of April, after going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Also adding hits for Saint Mary's was the single from Miller in the third, Miller was 1-for-1. Freshman David Alcaire had a double going 1-for-3 on the afternoon after getting the start at shortstop.
Scott Schneider came on in relief for the Gaels in the bottom of the fourth and went 3.2 innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs, no walks and three strike outs. Finishing out the game for the Gaels on the mound was freshman David Small who had his first taste of WCC action today, going one complete inning and one hit.
The two teams will play the final game of the series tomorrow with a 1:00 PM first pitch. On the mound for the Gaels will be Justin Kuks, who had a brilliant pitching performance, in his start last weekend at LMU.
