Loss Makes it Five in a Row for Baseball

Moraga, CA - It took nearly five innings before Saint Mary's (20-18-1/4-9 WCC) could collect their first hit, as the Gaels lost their fifth in a row, falling to Gonzaga (24-17/6-6 WCC) by a final score of 11-3 at Louis Guisto Field on Friday afternoon.

Bulldogs starter Matt Fields (7-2) was locked in as he had a no-hitter through 4.1, on the day Fields went seven complete, scattering three hits, one earned run, three walks and eight strike outs.

The Gaels first hit came in the bottom of the fifth when Justin Fazio roped a double into right field. On the day the Gaels managed just seven hits. The two biggest belonged to pinch hitter Ryan Young who hit a two run homerun in bottom of the eight. The second big hit also came in the eighth when Kenny Fuglerud extended his hit streak to a team high 13 games

Starting for the Gaels on Friday was Scott Schneider (5-4) who looked sharp to start the game, getting ground ball outs. However, he hit some bad luck in the third when the Bulldogs put up five. On the day Schneider went five complete, giving up nine hits, nine runs, five earned, walking four and striking out two.

Freshman Dorsey Ek came in on relief for the Gaels in the top of the sixth and added to his already strong freshman season totals. On the day Ek went four complete, giving up four hits, two runs, both earned, one walk and three strike outs.

The Bulldogs scored five in the bottom of the third, four in the fifth, and two in the seventh. Gonzaga's Drew Heid went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a single on the afternoon.

The two teams will resume play tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
