
Women's Lacrosse Loses to No. 16 Stanford 20-3 In MPSF Game

Stanford, CA - For the second time in three days, Saint Mary's ran into top teams in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and were defeated handlely. This time, the No. 16 ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated the Gaels 20-3 from Cagan Stadium on Friday night.
The Cardinal erupted for 13 first half goals en route to the easy win over Saint Mary's (2-11/0-2 MPSF). The Cardinal (7-5/3-1 MPSF) was led by sophomore Amanda Schwab and freshman Emily Layden, who had four goals apiece in the victory. The Gaels were led by P.J. Hainley, who scored two goals on the evening. The Cardinal outshot the Gaels 36-23, including 23-15 in the first half.
The Cardinal scored the first seven goals of the game and never looked back as they dominated from the opening draw. Amy Stillwell got the Cardinal started two minutes into the match and Leslie Foard followed just a minute later. Schwab scored three of her four goals in a nine minute span, and after Foard put home her second goal of the night, the Cardinal had their 7-0 lead.
The Gaels got on the scoreboard when Hainley scored an unassisted goal at the 14:36 mark of the first half. Stanford scored five more in a row after the Gaels got on the board, with Layden scoring two in the burst to give the Cardinal a 12-1 lead. Abbie Coleman scored the second goal of the half for SMC at the 3:20 mark, and Layden answered for the Cardinal, giving Stanford a 13-2 lead at halftime.
The second half began the same way as the first one as Stanford scored the first five goals of the half, with two of them coming off Bess Siegfried's stick. Senior Daphne Patterson got into the act in the last portion of the game, by scoring two goals in the game's final 15 minutes.
Stanford goalkeeper Laura Shane (7-5) recorded six saves in the victory, while SMC goalkeeper Hilary Gardner (2-11) took the loss.
Saint Mary's will return to MPSF play on Sunday, April 13 when the Gaels play at Oregon, with first draw scheduled for 1 p.m.
