Santa Clara, CA - Going into the top of the ninth Saint Mary's (23-27-1/5-13 WCC) was trailing by ten runs, when Kyle Jensen gave Gael fans a brief glimpse of excitement, as the big hitting left fielder hit his 13th homerun of the season. Unfortunately the Gaels could not overcome the 10 runs the Broncos scored in the middle innings, falling by a final score of 14-6 on Sunday afternoon.
In the top of the ninth Kyle Jensen clubbed a two run homerun on a 3-2 count. The homerun was Jensen's 13th of the season, putting him two behind James Mouton and Jeff Hebert for the single season record for Saint Mary's.
Ultimately however, the Gaels would lose their third game in a row, as the Broncos put up 14 runs, on 17 hits Sunday afternoon. On the mound for the Gaels was Scott Schneider (5-5) who managed 4.2 innings, surrendering 12 hits, and eight runs, six earned, walking one and striking out four.
The big inning for the Broncos was the fifth as they scored for runs, which would make the difference, highlighted by the two run big fly from short stop Jon Karcich.
The Gaels jumped out to a four run lead, scoring a run in the first and second and two runs in the third; the highlight being the 13th double of the season for red-shirt freshman Justin Fazio.
On the mound for the Broncos was Steve Kalush (5-2), who rebounded from the four runs surrendered early to earn his fifth win of the season. On the day Kalush went 6.2 innings, scattering nine hits, giving up four runs, two earned, while walking two and striking out seven.
Offensively the Gaels managed six runs off 11 hits, in addition to Jensen's big fly, four Gaels collected multiple hits. Senior Kenny Fuglerud continued his dangerous ways, going 2-for-4 scoring a run and knocking in a run.
Ryan Mulligan collected two hits, going 2-for-4 with a run; the patient catcher also collected his team leading 26th walk. Joel Staples and Justin Fazio each went 2-for-4 on the day as well.
Also collecting hits for the Gales was All-American Randy Wells who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Brian Hawkins also collected a hit, going 1-for-5 with a run scored.
Out of the pen for the Gaels was a trio of freshman, Taylor Reid, Dorsey Ek and David Small. Small had his best outing of the season, retiring all three batters that he faced.
The Gaels will resume play next weekend, when they head up north to play Portland for a three game series. The three games will be the final games of the 2008 season.
