SMC Athletics Closes Year With 9th Annual Gael Awards Show

Moraga, CA - The Ninth Annual Gael Award Show was a great night for Saint Mary's Athletics, as seniors and top performers from this past athletic year were honored. The event was held in the LeFevre Theatre on campus on Thursday, May 14. Highlights of the evening included the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and Performances of the Year awards, to name a few. Each program also put together a video to honor its graduating senior student-athletes.

The award show began with the highest team GPA award and for the sixth consecutive year, the women's tennis team was awarded the top GPA in the department, earning a cumulative 3.36 GPA. Next up was the presentation of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Mark Orr recognized the top 10 grade point averages by Gael student-athletes, with Dani Lucier from women's soccer leading the way with a GPA of 3.93.

The men's basketball team won the Gael Cup Award by posting the highest winning percentage among all SMC teams with a record of 28-7, and the Male and Female Performances of the Year Awards went to players from the basketball teams. Patrick Mills won the Male Performance of the Year for his clutch performance against Davidson in which he scored 23 points and had 10 assists, and Louella Tomlinson won the Female Performance of the Year for her 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 blocks against San Francisco.

The Newcomer of the Year awards went to the baseball's freshman sensation Troy Channing and to Anna Chkhikvishvilli from the women's tennis team.

Women's volleyball coach Rob Browning received his second Brother Agnon Coach of the Year honor, and the Male and Female Player of the Year awards were given to basketball stars Louella Tomlinson and Diamon Simpson.

The most prestigious awards of the night, the Male and Female George R. McKeon Senior Student-Athlete Awards went to women's rowing's Sierra Timmer and Mario Mendoza from the men's cross country team. The McKeon Award is presented to the senior student-athlete who has been outstanding in regards to their sport, academics, and in serving the community. Sierra earned a 3.72 GPA while leading her team to record times as well as in conference accolades. Mario was the leader of his team and a top runner in all of the WCC while earning a 3.26 GPA.
