During the summer of 2009, Mark Campbell was named as an assistant coach for the Saint Mary's men's basketball program. Cambell will assist with every aspect within the coaching staff, which include on the court teaching, recruiting, scouting, and practice and game preperation. Campbell, who begins his second season at Saint Mary's, joined the Gaels' staff as the Director of Basketball Operations in the summer of 2008. Campell came to Saint Mary's from Pepperdine University, where he was an assistant coach for the 2007-08 season.
Prior to his time at Pepperdine, Campbell was an assistant coach at Clackamas Community College, located in Oregon City, Oregon. He spent two seasons with the Cougars (2005-07) and helped them to the 2007 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championship.Campbell was responsible for recruiting and guard development. Clackamas' two-year record with Campbell as an assistant coach was 50-16 (.758), which included a school record of 29 wins in 2006-07.
Campbell played his final two seasons at the University of Hawaii, and graduated in 2004 with a degree in liberal studies. He was part of the Warriors' 2002 NCAA Tournament team and the 2003 National Invitational Tournament squad. He is the winningest two-year player in Hawaii history, and helped lead the Warriors to a school-record 29 wins in one season. Campbell was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Defensive Team in 2002-03 and was also a two-time Academic All-WAC selection.
He transferred to Hawaii from Clackamas Community College, where he played one season. In 2000-01, the Cougars finished sixth in the NWAACC and broke the school record for most wins (28) in a single season. Campbell was named the South Region MVP.
Campbell, who also earned a master's degree in Education from George Fox University in 2006, is a native of Mount Vernon, Washington, and attended Mount Vernon High School. He is married to Ashley, who earned All-American honors while playing basketball at Vanderbilt, and couple has daughter named Maley.
