SMC Baseball 5 Questions Series
During the 2011 season, various memebers of the Saint Mary's baseball team will sit down with marketing intern Alex Plain and answer five questions for an inside look at at the player. The players will answer a variety of questions ranging from off the field hobbies, to academics, to goals for the season. This feature should give the fans of Saint Mary's baseball an opportunity to get to know the players on a more personal level.
This week's featured player is Junior catcher Toby DeMello.
Toby DeMello enters his junior season as the unquestioned leader behind the dish for the Gaels and was named one of the team captains. After playing in 53 games starting 23, DeMello becomes the full-time catcher for Saint Mary's. Currently, he is off to a hot start, he is third on the team with a .278 average (10-for-36) with two doubles, and two run scored and an RBI. He is third on the team in slugging percentage, on base percentage doubles and total bases. He's fourth on the team in runs scored and hits.
The offensive fireworks have been just a bonus for Saint Mary's. It is DeMello's prowess behind the dish that sets him apart according to head coach Jedd Soto. "Toby is an exceptional catch and throw guy. He really limits the running game; he's a great blocker, great receiver, handles the pitchers well. A real leader, I think the position of catcher is going to be a key position for us and Toby is a big reason why."
Through the first 12 games, DeMello has picked off six base runners, SMC had seven total as a team in 2010, he has also thrown out five would be base stealers in 11 attempts. Those 11 outs have been huge to the Gaels pitching staff that has helped carry the Gaels. SMC's team ERA through 12 games currently sits at 3.06, which is the lowest ERA through 12 games in 12 years. DeMello has handled the staff beautifully that has relied heavily on seven freshmen
The native of Roseville, Calif. sat down with SMC Baseball's marketing intern Alex Plain to answer a few questions about the season and playing in the Saint Mary's program.
