Blogging On The Road With The Gaels

Anaheim, CA - So we have arrived in sunny Southern California, only there is no sun. In fact it is raining today. The Gaels arrived in town around 8:45 AM, after a quick trip to the hotel, the team headed to the Honda Center for their allotted practice time.
The Honda Center is where the NHL team the Anaheim Ducks play. For fans of the 1992 Emilio Estevez movie "The Mighty Ducks" there were plenty of quotes being shouted back and forth on the ride over to the arena.
Wooden Classic Participating Teams Lead Basketball Clinic For Special Olympics Athletes:
Two members of the Saint Mary's men's basketball team participated in a clinic for Special Olympics Athletes. It was a promotion put on by the people who organize the John R. Wooden Classic. Sophomore Jorden Page and freshman Brad Waldow represented the Gaels. Also participating in the clinic was Long Beach State, UCLA and BYU. Bill Walton and Jamaal Wilkes held a question and answer session directly following the clinic.
Watch Out AD On The Road:
Athletic Director Mark Orr joined the Gaels on the road trip to Anaheim. Orr followed the Gaels renting his own car, which got him into some hot water at the airport. Athletic trainer Amy Carroll had to wait behind to wait for her bag which didn't make it to John Wayne Airport with the rest of the luggage. So Orr offered to wait and give Carroll a ride to the hotel so the team could get ready for practice. While Orr was in his car waiting, he called Carroll to let her know where he was waiting for her. While doing this the traffic officer noticed Orr with the phone on and proceeded to tell him that he was driving while talking on his phone which is against the law. As Carroll says, the traffic cop started getting pretty heated, as Orr tells the story, it was pretty funny because there were several drivers around doing the same thing. The end result was Orr was allowed to leave with just a warning.
Memories Of The Happiest Place On Earth:
With Disneyland's The Magic Kingdom just a block away, we would be remised not to ask the players some of their favorite memories growing up and visiting the happiest place on earth. Redshirt junior Kenton Walker II remembers a trip in which he and his party were given passes to cut to the front of every line for the remainder of their visit to the park that day. Freshman Brad Waldow had a less than exciting memory; he remembers being stuck on Space Mountain for two hours once.
On the road travel totals:
Total Mileage by Air - 404 miles
Total Mileage by Bus - 19.3 miles
Total Number of Bags Lost This Year - 1
