MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's College of California athletics announced today it has formed a partnership with Treasury Wine Estates. Treasury Wine Estates, an internationally recognized wine group that is headquartered in Australia, engaged in this partnership with Saint Mary's because of the parallels between the values and visions of their company and the basketball program, fans, and alumni of Saint Mary's College.
Saint Mary's College is known as a popular landing place for Australian athletes, and as a result receives quite a bit of support from, and exposure to, the Australian community. During the 2009-10 season, SMC had 15 of its men's basketball games televised in Australia on ESPN Pacific Rim.
Treasury Wine Estates is a unique international premium wine business with a leading international portfolio of new world wines, beginning with the establishment of Australia's Penfolds in the mid 1840s. With over 12,000 hectares of vineyards, sales totaling over 35 million cases of wine annually, and revenues of over AU$2 billion, Treasury Wine Estates employs over 4,000 winemakers, viticulturists, sales, distribution and support staff across 12 countries.
"The synergies between Treasury Wine Estates and the Saint Mary's basketball program are infinite," said Debbie DuBois head of channel marketing for Treasury Wine Estates. "After seeing the large role Australia has played in the success of the program, as well as witnessing how dedicated and passionate the season ticket holders and alumni are, we at Treasury Wine Estates think this is the perfect partnership."
The agreement, which runs through the 2011 school year, will provide Treasury Wine Estates branding and marketing opportunities through pre-game socials and off-site events held for Saint Mary's College basketball season ticket holders, fans, and alumni. The first Treasury Wine Estates sponsored event will be the pre-game social in the Soda Center prior to the Saint Mary's game on January 15th against Santa Clara. Other events include a viewing of the Saint Mary's away game against Gonzaga at Treasury Wine Estates 'Cellar 360' location in Ghirardelli Square on January 27th, another on campus pre-game social prior to the February 24th Gonzaga game, and an end of the season gathering at a Treasury Wine Estates winery to be determined at a later date.
Saint Mary's is extremely excited to partner with Treasury Wine Estates," said Mark Orr, Athletic Director, at Saint Mary's College. "This will be a very unique partnership, one which we are excited to get into." Assistant Athletic Director and head of corporate partnerships noted, "Treasury Wine Estates is putting together a number of activities that will greatly enhance the game day experience for our fans, SMC will be simultaneously working to help promote Treasury Wine Estates, not only regionally and nationally, but also internationally through our ties to Australia. The synergies between the two parties are almost endless."
This partnership was facilitated by IMG College, the exclusive third party sales representative for the college's corporate sponsorship program. "Both IMG College and Saint Mary's College are extremely excited about launching this partnership with Treasury Wine Estates," said Dan Shell, Vice President of National Sales for IMG College in the western region. "With the tremendous brand synergies between these two entities, we look forward to helping Treasury Wine Estates reach some of its business objectives through the tremendous appeal of college athletics, specifically the affinity displayed within the Saint Mary's College fan base."
