
Saint Mary's Weekend Recap

For Saint Mary's athletics, the weekend was packed with tons of action. Women's volleyball won both of their matches, sweeping the weekend series. Men's soccer shutout Santa Clara Thursday and then proceeded to tie 0-0 against USF on Sunday. As for Women's soccer, Gonzaga and Santa Clara proved to be difficult competitors. The women tied Gonzaga 1-1 Friday night and lost to Santa Clara 2-1 Sunday afternoon. Finally, the cross-country teams traveled to Golden Gate Park to participate in the Gator Invitational hosted by San Francisco State University and the rowing team had five boats competing in two races, the first races of the year.
Saint Mary's volleyball made a huge statement this weekend by winning both of their games. Starting Thursday evening, the Gaels had their first conference win of the season against Gonzaga, winning 3-0. Sophomore Jordan Shaw led the team with a high of 13 kills on 25 attempts. Following the win, the Gaels suited up to play Portland, winning 3-1 and improving their conference record.
Men's soccer received a 2-0 win over No. 17 Santa Clara on Friday. Julian Godinez and Agustin Cazarez scored for the Gaels, improving their record to 3-3-4, 2-0-1 WCC. On Sunday afternoon, Saint Mary's played USF and tied 0-0. Goalkeeper Doug Herrick had six saves in the game and tied the school record of having 22 career victories.
Cross-country headed to San Francisco to participate in the Gator Invitational hosted by SFSU. Freshmen Zach Newsom lead with Gaels with an overall finish of 55th and time of 27:25. For the women, sophomore Maureen May placed 49th overall in 24:32 after returning from an injury.
Friday night women's soccer battled against Gonzaga in its West Coast Conference opener, coming out with a 1-1 tie. Vicki Shimkus was the only player who scored, as both teams went scoreless in overtime. On Sunday, the Gaels faced Santa Clara, losing 2-1 with Christina Tognetti scoring in the second half.
